A large majority of people have never used handmade soap before. In fact, most people have never used soap before. Wait…what? If you look at commercial products sold in stores, it’s likely you won’t find the term “soap” on the package. Commercial soap sold in stores is often made with chemical detergents, hardeners and synthetic lathering agents. Some of these ingredients can be drying or irritating on the skin. On the other hand, handmade soap created with oils, liquid and lye does not contain these harsh ingredients and qualifies as ‘soap.’

Cold Process Soap Making is the act of mixing fixed oils (eg. Olive, Coconut and Palm Oil) with an alkali (Sodium Hydroxide or Lye). The result is a chemical process called saponification, where the composition of the oils change with the help of the lye to create a bar of soap.

In some simple steps, making of handmade soap goes like this – Firstly, the lye is mixed with water. Then the oils are mixed and heated. Once the oils and lye-water mix are at 95-105 degrees, they are mixed together in a separate bowl. If the temperature is lower, then the soap will be crumbly. On mixing, as the mixture becomes lighter in colour and thick, the herbs or other additives are combined and poured into moulds.

The moulds are covered with plastic wrap and wrapped again in a towel. After 24- 36 hours, when the mixture is cold and firm, it is taken out on parchment paper and cut into whatever shape you like. The soap has to cure for 4 weeks or so with turning every week. After 4 weeks, the soap is ready and needs to be stored in an airtight container.

Handmade soaps use essential oils derived from plants and natural colorants like clays. Other natural ingredients, like milk and purees, can also be added to handmade soap. You won’t find those quality ingredients in your bar of store bought soap. In addition to colour, a lot of these naturally occurring ingredients have qualities of their own which gets added to soap. Beetroot and green tea powder contain anti-oxidants, carrots contain beta-carotene, chlorophyll has deodorising qualities, coffee and cornmeal are exfoliating and rose is high in vitamin C”

Handmade soap also contains glycerin. Glycerin is a humectant that attracts moisture from the air to the skin. It’s produced naturally during the soapmaking process. It’s one of the things that make handmade soap so amazing! The one thing in homemade soap you can’t substitute is “Lye”. Lye is Sodium hydroxide, which “must be 100% and in crystal form only”. But once the lye reacts with the oils in soap (Saponification), it gets completely dissolved and in the finished soap, there is no lye” A Cold Process technique allows you to customise every single ingredient to suit your personal preferences. You can add whatever ingredients you like and let the creativity flow. Although this is a longer process, but the amount of creativity possible is immense.

Hi Welcome to Wudbox,

At Wudbox you are viewing the produce of the local crafts people of your country. We promote small businesses & individual artists and provide a platform for them to pursue their passion and love for creative work.

Until now these people have only sold locally, but now their designs and work is seen nationwide through us. All they need is your support and encouragement to succeed in their endeavor.

These sellers are either craftsmen themselves or are directly working with one to bring these pieces of art into existence and hence their products are appropriately priced citing the fact that there is no middlemen.

The prices of the goods include the cost of the raw materials, the time that it takes to produce these products, the GST and the money required by the craftsmen to sustain their modest living. Also, all these products are made in small quantities and do not have the advantage of the bulk products produced with the machines.

Be assured that your product is made with a lot of love, care and attention given to the details. To err however is human and it might contain a few irregularities and that is what makes each piece unique and different.

We constantly give our feedback and inputs to these newly arrived sellers about the products and packaging process, however if you have certain useful insights then do feel free to share them with us, it will definitely help them to succeed faster.

Certain out sourced external factors like logistics are out of our control, however, we do track them and also empower you by providing the tracking details the moment they are provided to us.

Above all, Wudbox promotes a shift from a society of over-consumption of products and services to one based on well-being, belonging and sustainable living. After all a country and indirectly we progress only when there is a uniform distribution of income and people are able to sustain their presence.

And yes ofcourse, who minds using a product that is definitely unique and uncommon and makes them stand out.

THE SOAP YARD

We create beautiful handcrafted soaps using 100% pure essential oils & natural ingredients that will leave your skin feeling smooth and soft!

Poonam’s father had a soap manufacturing business many years ago and looking at him, she always felt that she wanted to do this. There was a strange attraction to the craft and she did several courses and learned the art of making soap and other beauty products. After starting her own business, she had to give up her passion for her family as her children became priority. But around a year back, fortunately for us, she decided to start over- the fire within her which was very much alive.

Poonam has her own Salon and runs her soap and beauty product business on her own. When she decided to restart, she realised that she needed to learn everything again to have the best knowledge. After re-learning the art and craft of making beauty products, and based on her previous experience, she started The Soap Yard- producing beautiful, natural and safe beauty products. Her daughter, Malvika joined in and helps her with the branding and marketing for her business. Along with producing these products, Poonam also teaches production of shampoos, creams and face packs. She also arranges DIY workshops regularly and has online classes where she instructs on the production of beauty products. With her penchant and zeal to keep doing more and pushing the boundaries for both herself and the skill of making beauty products, she is well on her way to achieve her goals.

And her goal is simple- anyone who uses her soap or another product, should smile. Her motive is that simple. For that, she does not compromise on quality ever. All the raw material required is grown at her own home and she never uses anything artificial for her products. She ensures that she makes something good for your skin and hair along with being aromatic and beautiful to look at. Now that is a skill and she is a true master! She is constantly looking to innovate her products and believes that becoming complacent will stop her in her tracks. With her journey well charted out, Poonam and Malvika are well on their way to create an awesome, amazing, handmade and natural beauty product brand.
